How to Get a Job

I have been an elementary school teacher for the past 30 years. It was easier to get a job back then, I'm sure, but here is my advice for people today looking for a teaching job.

I landed my first teaching job by having a family friend arrange an interview with the principal when an opening was posted. The principal said he liked me so much and was impressed with my personality and knowledge. He hired me right on the spot. He also thought that I would be a good fit into his existing faculty.

I landed my first teaching job because I possess these qualities. First, I am organized, hard-working, energetic, positive, fair and have a great sense of humor. I am willing to challenge myself. Having a smiling, caring attitude, with the confidence that I could do the job came through in the interview process. I also have strong people skills and was able to convey that I work well with others, that I am a team player.

Finding a teaching job can be hard, but here is some advice to make it easier. Utilize your resources, find family friends that may know someone that can give you a reference or help you to get an interview. Look professional and have a resume that will stand out, a picture on it does help. Do your homework about the district's policies, programs, and people in charge. Practice your interviewing skills and be able to show how you will make an impact on the staff. Let the principal know all you have to offer. Good luck!
